The Road Ahead: Hope, Action & Real Change 🐾

Published by PAW Policy Project

If there’s one word that sums up how I feel about the future, it’s hopeful.

I’ve spent the past year building a focused plan to bring about real reform, not just talking, but doing. From stronger protections to responsible legislation, we’re stepping into a new era for animal welfare.

And it’s not just a vision. It’s already happening.

Florida Takes a Stand with Two Groundbreaking Laws

Under Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida has passed two new laws that mark a major shift in how we protect animals, especially when it comes to accountability and emergency situations.

Dexter’s Law

Creates a statewide animal abuser registry and increases penalties for those convicted of repeated cruelty.
Why it matters: This law gives agencies and rescues a tool to prevent animals from ending up in the hands of known abusers.

Trooper’s Law

Imposes criminal penalties (up to $10,000 and 5 years in prison) for abandoning animals during natural disasters.
Why it matters: It ensures pets aren't left behind in life-threatening conditions and recognizes the seriousness of animal abandonment.

Both laws take effect October 1, 2025, and serve as a blueprint for future legislation nationwide.

 Where We’re Headed

I’m energized, focused, and committed. These legislative wins prove what’s possible when we combine data, advocacy, and action. The PAW Policy Project will be launching its next initiatives soon including:

  • A policy toolkit for local lawmakers

  • A statewide rescue support network

  • Advocacy templates for community use

  • Volunteer and legislative outreach campaigns
