What they don’t see are the hidden costs of where that puppy came from, and the enormous toll puppy mills and backyard breeding take on both animals and communities.
The Real Impact of Unregulated Breeding
Puppy mills and unlicensed backyard breeders operate with one goal: profit. Dogs are often bred in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions with little to no veterinary care, socialization, or concern for genetic health. Females are overbred until their bodies are worn out, then discarded. Puppies from these environments frequently suffer from disease, malnutrition, and behavioral issues, leaving families with unexpected vet bills and heartbreaking outcomes.
But the cost isn’t just borne by the animals or the families who purchase them, it’s also felt by our communities. Unregulated breeding directly fuels the overpopulation crisis.
